The dawning of a new day. A day filled with hope. Just being alive and breathing can give you a purpose even if you are flat on your back.

 Listening to inspirational stories of many persons who made it without limbs or even being able to get out of bed, has brought home the thoughts that even with insufficient populations there is something that everyone can do to bring about a change for the positive.

 What is on your agenda? How do you intend to carry it out?

 For those looking for things new ideas as entrepreneurs, here we have another set of ideas for you that could work in an island nation.

 Something that lots of people need but few know where to find, offer proofreading services. You can offer this through advertising at home and through looking for such services online.

Become a Virtual Assistant. You can do a lot of clerical work for persons online. This does pay.

 A word that Bahamians love to hear... maybe the entire world loves to hear ... Free.... Try testing apps for free to you and get paid for doing so. Investigate this online.

 Another great freelance business is that of data entry that a lot of companies need as they bring their businesses online.

 Do you like taking surveys? Now how would you like to be paid just to do that? There are a number of sites to check online for this "job".

 One of my favourites is that of Social Media Management and its something I also offer. Just help busy people keep on top of their social media presence.

 Are you an expert in a certain field but you have trouble finding a job in that area? Then try being a consultant which could pay some of what you are worth and take on more than one client which would really improve your numbers.

 Another testing idea is that of test websites. There is a site for that.

 How about tutoring? Another avenue for experts, specialists or teachers wanting to make a few extra funds.

 If you love crafts and make a fair amount of products, why not get to selling them online? There are internation sites and well as Facebook sites that are specific to your area where you can find your audience.

 I'm seeing more and more of them now, and it seems that the idea of photography has really taken off. Well, everyone has a niche market in photography so go for it.

 Criticizing products with a view of making it better is something companies like and so you can try even getting paid for it. Just reach out online to your favourite companies to see if they pay for assistance in reviewing their products.

 Being bi-lingual is great and being a freelance translator can be very productive. You not only meet a lot of different persons but you can just translate documents if you are more of an introvert.

 There is something for everyone on this journey.

 Becoming more and more popular is the idea of Affiliate Marketing, by using your blog to help companies boost their products.

 All businesses and organizations need help with graphic designing, whether it's their logo, business cards, stationary, etc they need help and are willing to pay.

 Add to Blogging, the whole idea of Writing and publishing your own books online.

 Years ago many of these ideas were not viable, but in this world of fast communication and connectivity, you be be anywhere making money with a computer. Give it a try and let me know how it worked for you.

In a recent discussion with an acquaintance who is a long time resident of Grand Bahama, he said he hopes Freeport turns around to which I quickly reminded him of the days when we thought Freeport was going down. After the rush of the 50's and the 60s that ushered in a lot of constructions and the building of Freeport which pushed the natives to the outer areas, there came the 70s and the smaller investors leaving quickly. However, in the late 70s and early 80s there was still a lot of activity here. There were over ten big hotels on the island and two casinos. Also there was Sir Laker who came in to add Laker Airways to the airlift to this island. The industrial side was holding its own but things were beginning to taper off. "Bend or Break speech"

"Bend or Break speech" On July 26, 1969, Sir Lynden O. Pinding, then Premier of The Bahamas, delivered this speech during an inspection tour at the official opening ceremony for the new Bahamas Oil Refinery Company (BORCO). This speech in history has been called the "Bend or Break Speech" and has long be said by officials in Grand Bahama to be the reason the lights went out at the "Magical Fair" that was the spark called Freeport. Here is the entire speech: “I am certainly delighted to be here this morning because what I see beginning on this site is not only the erection of an oil refinery but also the real true birth of a petro-chemical industry in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas Islands. A pictorial look at Freeport 1950-1960s

Before hitting the great days of the 70s and 80s I found these photos of Freeport on Oldbahamas.com and thought to share them. Remember that unlike Nassau, New Providence, Freeport, Grand Bahama did not have the history. What history we have now is the growing up of Freeport and the entire island due to the formation of the Hawksbill Creek Agreement,  the Grand Bahama Port Authority and the Grand Bahama Development Company. A boom of energy and a vision that was all set, but later side tracked by the thought of sharing the profits was what we were left with and little though of how to recover and move on with proper legislation to assist all.
