Celebrating three years...

Image
A beautiful sunrise. There is much to say for every new day. Its a chance to do something new or complete something that had already begun. Today is a great day and tomorrow we celebrate three years of this blog.. "Flipping Grand Bahama". I still run into a lot of people who have never heard of it, and some who say they read it. I'm thinking of new formats and ways of presenting reasons to change our mindset to make Grand Bahama "Grand" again. Much has happened in the past three years. Just check out the changes in the buildings which were done to make the thoroughfare more inviting for investors. There are a number of things going on with foreign investor participation and the young are really getting into trying things for themselves. I have been listening to the young people and they seem to know what they want and are ready to run after it. They are hampered here and there by parents who are interested in caution and safety which never made ...

The good in negativity...

Image
With emphasis in the blog being on changing the mindset for positive lasting growth in this community Im sure many may wonder why such a title. Is there good in negativity? My grand mother used to say, "there are all kinds of good including no good and good for nothing." In the words of motivator (still motiving even after his death) Zig Ziglar, "some people find failure as if there is a reward in it". I was somewhat put off just yesterday as a lady was talking with a mutual friend saying how bad things are "while some people are walking around saying its all good as if nothing is going wrong".  Maybe she meant me ... maybe she didn't. But I believe you get what you focus on, and if you focus on the bad there is hardly much good coming from that. I choose to believe what I choose to believe and if was the belief of one man in many cases that got the whole world moving in many ways. The one true God did that with creation. The one messia...

Bridge now open

Image
The Sir Jack Hayward bridge opened on May 2, 2016 with some fanfare. I had to include the construction picture and then the final product with Sir Jacks family heading to a stop to spread Sir Jacks ashes. It was a touching day at all were reminded of the selfless work of Sir Jack and his insistence on having this bridge built to stop there ever being a cut of for the people in the east from the rest of Grand Bahama. Also there was a lot of talk about possible developments in the Barbary Beach area. Lets wait to see.

Pop up shops

Image
Pop up shops that I have in other countries are making their way here to Grand Bahama. This is the second Sip and Shop event that encouraged small entrepreneurs and their customers to get together to have eats and shop at the same time. Just in time for Mothers Day it appears the event will be even bigger than the first in Christmas. This is one way to get the word out on what these various businesses have for sale and to find unique items for Mom this year. The last time the proceeds were to go to Lupus... Well as its just next week... everyone have fun

Then and now....

After an eleven year sabbatical from Grand Bahama I returned to a very depressed looking place. In 2013 I took some pictures of businesses/buildings on Queens Highway. It's so easy to become discouraged and feel nothing is happened, if you are looking for only the good and better you notice to little sparks happen. Here are some changes. Beginning with the Bethel Roberts and Co building which is up for sale Also for sale is the former headquarters for Burns House Other photos of buildings that have gotten a new lease on life thanks to the artwork by Sheldon Saint with help from the Grand Bahama Port Authority include this one. Other buildings that has revived business are: This was the Coopers Lab. And this was the Light fixture business that is now Island Bedding. While working at The Freeport News my then General Manager Mr. Ollie Ferguson was very concerned about the way Freeport looked, particularly on t...

Emerge in the world

Image
I  believe this is one of the first for Grand Bahama ... a teleconference and it promises to be dynamic. I only missed the first night but plan to be there for the rest.  Hosted by Raquel Hart gaining momentum throughout the world, this conference is all about building your brand and marketing. It is unique in its format.. all online... the way of the future and using all gadgets to allow for persons from all over the world to participate. If and when she decides to charge for this event.... her market is not limited to simply the almost 400,000 in The Bahamas but to more of the 8 billion people in the world from our little Grand Bahama. The possibilities are endless and you can tap in too. Check it out.

Change comes when we believe it will

Image
This is a time of change ... not just in one place.. but all over the world. The point of this blog is to say that change is coming and it will be better if we set our minds to receive it.  The above video was selected mainly to discuss this topic.  There has been a lot of talk about things that are about to coming, jobs that are coming and lives to be made better. As things have changed but for the worst for some... the affects of three hurricanes in Grand Bahama in 2004/2005 has made a lot of people here very negative and depressed. It's like watching Eww from Winnie The Poo who is forever depressed and has nothing good to say or think. Always feeling that whatever can go wrong, will go wrong and at the worst possible time, a law of Murphy.  But things can and will change. They will change according to how you feel it will take place and if you decide to treat everything as if it has already changed and embrace the change you want to see... we will will be s...
