Reinventing ourselves

So back in May of this year, a comment came from a reader, Brad Ingersoll on our Facebook.

 His comment came to a blog on the possible closure of the Grand Lucaya.
Brad Ingersoll At one time thousands worked in Grand Bahama, at resorts, cab tours, food and beverage and such. Now the world has changed and the island needs to re invent itself and it can be done. Cuba will not help with Island tourism as crazy Americans will need to travel to a 3rd world Communist country to see what's its all about!

 This got me to thinking.... how would we re-invent ourselves? (That's all I took away from what he said. What about you?)

 What do we want to look like? A thriving metropolis?

 To reach a standard, we need to set a bar? Is the bar from our past? 

 I've had a lot of time to think about this. We have been saying over and over again that we want the good old days to come back, but what influenced those days and are they positive and acceptable and adaptable to now?

 So, thinking we need a fresh start that would take us to being recognized as a great place to live and work in harmony, I'd ask, what are the things that would make this possible.

 Some say jobs. Those are on the way, but once again, are we prepared for them? Do we have sufficient persons in all fields to take on the opportunities that are becoming available? If not, are we doing anything about it?

 As you answer, you can simply begin steering yourself or others into these areas to prepare.

 If not, then can you see opportunities for you to start a small business to fill a small role that would sustain you and family?

 A switch that can make light pass from one place to another properly shared can get you billions. Have you found that one switch?

 How about selling food near the places where construction is going on and setting up for yourself a clientele that would appreciate a restaurant that you open in future? Today is short, make your dream long term.

 How about a secretarial firm to assist persons in business who don't have the time to put pen to paper when they should?

 There are many ideas and more to come. But are you ready? Nothing happens before its time.... and its time ... for as the saying goes success is when opportunity meets preparation. Are you prepared?

In a recent discussion with an acquaintance who is a long time resident of Grand Bahama, he said he hopes Freeport turns around to which I quickly reminded him of the days when we thought Freeport was going down. After the rush of the 50's and the 60s that ushered in a lot of constructions and the building of Freeport which pushed the natives to the outer areas, there came the 70s and the smaller investors leaving quickly. However, in the late 70s and early 80s there was still a lot of activity here. There were over ten big hotels on the island and two casinos. Also there was Sir Laker who came in to add Laker Airways to the airlift to this island. The industrial side was holding its own but things were beginning to taper off. "Bend or Break speech"

"Bend or Break speech" On July 26, 1969, Sir Lynden O. Pinding, then Premier of The Bahamas, delivered this speech during an inspection tour at the official opening ceremony for the new Bahamas Oil Refinery Company (BORCO). This speech in history has been called the "Bend or Break Speech" and has long be said by officials in Grand Bahama to be the reason the lights went out at the "Magical Fair" that was the spark called Freeport. Here is the entire speech: “I am certainly delighted to be here this morning because what I see beginning on this site is not only the erection of an oil refinery but also the real true birth of a petro-chemical industry in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas Islands. A pictorial look at Freeport 1950-1960s

Before hitting the great days of the 70s and 80s I found these photos of Freeport on Oldbahamas.com and thought to share them. Remember that unlike Nassau, New Providence, Freeport, Grand Bahama did not have the history. What history we have now is the growing up of Freeport and the entire island due to the formation of the Hawksbill Creek Agreement,  the Grand Bahama Port Authority and the Grand Bahama Development Company. A boom of energy and a vision that was all set, but later side tracked by the thought of sharing the profits was what we were left with and little though of how to recover and move on with proper legislation to assist all.
