What is there to do in Grand Bahama
There are some buildings that only look abandoned. This one was one of them.
Unfortunately I don't have a picture of her sad face prior to the work that is presently being done to revive her former glory.
It was once our very own Lowe's Pipe and Steel. Question is, what happened? It has been closed though for some 20 years at least.
But Im told the building on Yellow Pine Rd was bought by Coca Cola and will begin with a fresh start. More good news.
Like the Spinx we shall rise out of our ashes.
The old Home Depot on West Sunrise Highway, is now the home to Freeport Ship Services.
We still have the wonderful old staples in the industrial park - Bahamas Oil Refining Company (although its just a bunkering company now), Freeport Harbour, Freeport Container Port, Bahamas Rock (where once sat the Cement Company), Polymers, Grand Bahama Shipyard and Grand Bahama Power Company.
Along with the Grand Bahama Port Authority and the hotels, these are are major employers and success stories along with Bradford Marine, Freeport Ship Services and a number of others.
We still have some small businesses the crop up over night and disappear just as quickly which seem to be suffering from lack of promotions and a lot of people on the island saying there is nothing here to do.
As I have always said, we need to change our mindset.
What is there to do in Grand Bahama.... we have fishing, golfing, birding, parasailing, boat rides, jet skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, access to travel to other Bahamians island and the United States, beach walks, beach picnics, exercising, basketball, softball, squash, civic organizations, fraternal organizations, reading clubs, tertiary education, tennis, rugby, soccer, darts, weight training, swimming, theatre, dance lessons, performances, art galleries, jeep safari rides, kayaking, eco-tours, island tours, bon fires, walking tours, biking tours, visiting our Garden of the Groves - botanical garden, trips to the fatherest parts of the island which is 93 miles long, take part in parades, Junkanoo, a cultural center, back yard farming, visits the caves, visit the petting zoo, horse back riding, camping, night clubing and there is the option still of doing nothing.
Many of our people opt to do nothing and tell visitors there is nothing here to do - foreign and Bahamian visitors are told the same thing, unless the visitors came here specifically to take part in some activity.
This is sad. On your island you should know about the things to do and find out what interests the visitor and then find a list of things that may accommodate them.
All over town on posters, fliers, billboards, in newspapers, on television and on Facebook there are advertisements of other things to do - concerts, art shows, comedy shows, etc.
What is it that you like to do?
Are you a foody? There are many restaurants around the island with quite a number of them being in Port Lucaya marketplace.
But don't forget the small real island cooking found in the outskirts like Pink Pearl in Bootle Bay, Chicken Nest in West End, EJ's in McLean's Town, Bishops in High Rock.
Did I miss something? Please write to let me know.
We do have a lot to offer to those who really want it and only if the rest of us knew what they are are where to find them.
For many of thees new businesses to continue, we need to support them. Like this one:
Color Me Mind is a business that sprung up about three years ago. It is a great idea that can bring people together. Its a wonderful treat for Father/Daughter, Mother/Son, Parents date days with their kids. This store also offers build a bear facilities.
How many people on Grand Bahama knows about it as it stands on its last legs?
The old Parliament Square, a replica of the one in Nassau was set up here in Freeport but also died because of lack of participation.
However, it has resurfaced as Grum Ma's House Cultural Center in Hunters now, next to the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Have you been to visit? Have you told others about it? It shows off our culture in music, art, books, straw work, etc.
Do you know about OldBahamas.com? It has pictures of various places around the islands of yesteryear.
