Slow changes

Its the middle of the years and really we are slowly sweeping into the end of 2014. What has happened so far in Grand Bahama?

Well the truth is, if you want to be negative it's really easy and you can say nothing.

To be realistic and positive there has been some small but steady changes.

In the world of real estate, there has been some small pockets of great fortune as things change.

This is one of the indicators of an economy - real estate.

Another indicator is construction and although we have not seen a lot of construction going on at present some has picked up.

We are still waiting for such projects as the sale of a major hotel or the building of the one projected for out East, but what about the smaller enterprises that you can work on just for you that can work itself into hiring others?

What about the incubators?

Grand Bahama will do well with an incubator for small businesses. This is a dream of mine and my daughters' ... to start an incubator. It's not shared space but actually a space with all the technical help necessary to help a business start and grow til it can leave the compound.

It can work in Freeport but it may be better outside of the Grand city as it would be cheaper to do so.

It is something that I saw in person in Jamaica and heard of in other Caribbean countries and they are the equivalent of garage businesses that begin in small spaces and grow to leave the garage.

Most start-up businesses cannot afford the hefty sums required for a business license in Freeport and the viability is tested sorely with the overhead. But, if the prices were less and utilities more reasonable, who knows what could happen?!

The business owner is required to pay a fee but with the collective paying fees the payment of the various utilities are taken care of. With sufficient funding provided by private groups or crowd funding, then the individuals can move steadily on.

Sometimes only a small light need to be seen to reach the end of the tunnel.

Where is the vision? Inside of all of us. It just takes the willing to meet the able and we can see more rapid changes made up us and not by superman that we have been waiting to rescue us.
