Jobs, jobs, jobs...

Looking at my island I feel betrayed
promises and promises of a better day
a brighter day, a day of joy
Has your eyes glassed over and are you
longing to finally give up the ghost?
Cant you be persuaded to fight
just once more  for you and your family

After watching Ghandi this past weekend I was inspired to ask if the rantings of one optimist makes a difference on the island? In a country of 300 plus million at that time peacefully Ghandi implored this people to put down their weapons to think and to liberate the country and then to stop civil war.

I wish my people would put down the political weapons that keep us ignorant.
We need to fight for the employment we deserve. To make the jobs and work them. To bring the hope and drive back to Freeport. To really mean it when we say the "good ole days are coming back" and show it by working on making it so.

As for the politicians, in the words of Ghandi, "What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?"

After the false promises while they become rich, and the people of Grand Bahama has suffered the wrongs of taxation which according to the Hawksbill Creek Agreement there should be none and the causes all to leave or die, what then?

Investors local and foreign are thinking twice about this place. What are the incentives to being here? If none, then there are many other places in the world they can go.

I noticed that New York is a programme now that is being advertised, that I have been advocating for over a year and one that is somewhat taken up by flintstoneinc.com for The Bahamas  - which should resources for persons seeking to start a business, find a business regulation, Check a status or make a payment (all online), business assistance, consumer assistance, employment, and finances -showing you how to finance your way your into your business, school/ training.

We need to stop using the word that unites us "jobs" to get the attention of those we use. Its a weapon that is losing its effectiveness.

We need to start doing the things that will make us great. Live up to the words we uttered to promise a better life and better yet, come up with a 20 - 40 year plan on how we intend to make this a great island, and a better country, not one thats limping from one administration to another.








First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

In a recent discussion with an acquaintance who is a long time resident of Grand Bahama, he said he hopes Freeport turns around to which I quickly reminded him of the days when we thought Freeport was going down. After the rush of the 50's and the 60s that ushered in a lot of constructions and the building of Freeport which pushed the natives to the outer areas, there came the 70s and the smaller investors leaving quickly. However, in the late 70s and early 80s there was still a lot of activity here. There were over ten big hotels on the island and two casinos. Also there was Sir Laker who came in to add Laker Airways to the airlift to this island. The industrial side was holding its own but things were beginning to taper off. Mountain top experiences

The Grand Bahama Port Authority is really going all out this year as they are not only hoping to bring in investors but also to create more investors/entrepreneurs at home.  This is a very favourable turn of events with the new Business Development Department. This conference would be the third event launched by the Port this year, the first being the My Grand Bahama Campaign, then the Customer Service Workshop and now the Economic Empowerment Development Conference.  As the world turns and the seasons for each place, especially Grand Bahama, is just about complete with its valley times for now, we are moving closer to the mountain and looking forward to some mountain top experiences. Here it's about setting a stage for all players to be ready. Grand Bahama will flourish with more residents. A pictorial look at Freeport 1950-1960s

Before hitting the great days of the 70s and 80s I found these photos of Freeport on Oldbahamas.com and thought to share them. Remember that unlike Nassau, New Providence, Freeport, Grand Bahama did not have the history. What history we have now is the growing up of Freeport and the entire island due to the formation of the Hawksbill Creek Agreement,  the Grand Bahama Port Authority and the Grand Bahama Development Company. A boom of energy and a vision that was all set, but later side tracked by the thought of sharing the profits was what we were left with and little though of how to recover and move on with proper legislation to assist all.
