Clean up a success
On Saturday March 12, 2016 civic groups of all ages came out to help in the clean up at the International Bazaar in Freeport.
Again on the Facebook Page there were many comments of nostalgia as the announcement of this cleanup was made.
It's one of those things that has many different reactions. Some say tear it down and start again... but the structure is good for the most part for most of the buildings.
Some ask where are the owners and why won't they do anything?
Having examined this question and talking with a few persons it appears that there is great belief that only incoming investors can change the fate of this once thriving marketplace. Despite the evidence of a great increase in tourists coming to the island, none can be sent to the International Bazaar because there aren't sufficient businesses. But the owners say, they don't have enough people coming through and have a firm belief that until the hotel next door is up and thriving again, there would be no business.
Hmmmm.... the chicken and the egg?
I love the statement.. "Build it, they will come!"
Reasons to change our mindset. If we don't make it, remake it, hold on to it and believe it in ... no then no one else will see the beauty in the gem that once was and can be again.
The participation of the groups... students and adults showed that there are people out there who feel it can be rebuilt and become a place of commerce again. It does not necessarily need the rich... or incoming investors. Maybe if we believe enough we can bring it back ourselves. If you didn't know you couldn't do it... you would be like me.... still trying!
