What ifs.....

Whimsy and fanciful are feelings being expressed today and we explore the subject of "What Ifs...."

Hmmm.... Where can I start.

Yesterday talking with friends I realized that there could be sufficient jobs for those persons simply looking for jobs, if...

And there would be other opportunities for middle men in all professions if....

What is this if?

Well I can start by looking at something close to me.... golf courses. Now you may laugh and say what does the golf courses have to do with the economy of Grand Bahama?

Once upon a time, Grand Bahama have about seven golf courses - Jack Tar, Shannon, Reef, Lucayan, Fortune, Ruby and Emerald. Today we have only three with a possible four - Reef, Ruby, Fortune and the non-functioning Old Bahama Bay which is actually almost ready.

Where are the jobs? In the club houses, at their bars, cutting their lawns, maintaining their equipment, etc.

Most of these are attached to hotels, but ... what about the hotels?

Wait until the Xanadu is sold! Yes! When it is sold! (very fanciful and whimsical but go along with me).

First it would mean construction jobs because it has to be torn down and rebuilt. Anyone buying that place would have to gut the buildings and realize they are only buying the beautiful location and history. Then it would mean hotel jobs for maintenance staff and security until it is near to open and we have the other staff members coming on. Even if it means about 80 persons employed(the hotel is much larger than that),  that would make a difference to Grand Bahama.

Oh but how much is the Xanadu going for? Check out all the real estate companies in Grand Bahama and find out. Hopefully the Government of The Bahamas is watching to make sure this price is fixed and not like interest rates - fluctuates.

Look at the old Princess Country Club? It was so beautiful, and the old Princess Towers/Royal Oasis. Again, construction jobs and then hotel staff. With just the right management company these properties can be brought back to their former glory. It has happened all over the world. If hotels can thrive in the desert - why not in the beautiful sunshine of The Bahamas.

Princess Towers back in the day

Things not used always deteriorate. As the old adage goes, if you don't use it, you will lose it so there are many potential construction jobs in Freeport.

How about someone/corporation taking over the old Arawak Hotel on the canal. Beautiful position with many spin off opportunities - boat cruises beginning there, restaurants, etc.

Once we have places to stay for our tourism sector - build it, they will come - let's look at what more can be done. Amnesia be sold and made into a top class night club with lots of live entertainment for the young and young at heart. What about the Jokers Wild and Studio 69? Great places to be brought back ..... after construction ... giving our locals and our guests something else to do; somewhere else to go for entertainment.

Or the native reviews at the Yellowbird which is strategically located by the Castaways, near Amnesia, The Royal Islander and the International Bazaar.

These things once were so, its not much to imagine again.

Where are we in our development? Does anyone care?

I remember going to a church in Grand Bahama where the pastor preached about seeing great things happening in Grand Bahama. I left there to look outside and wondered what is wrong with him. But I was told that the power of life and death is in the tongue. He was speaking it into existance.

Are we speaking prosperity or are we ok with the blight we presently see without hope of better?

If you think you can do nothing then I implore you to speak with your political representative and ask them what can be done. If they cannot give a definitive answer, you know how to get someone who can and make them do what is necessary to make it better.

We as a people need to rescue ourselves and together we can do it.

I've read the articles that say how many people in Grand Bahama are homeless. Its a sad state we are in, but we are allowing it to continue when we can rise up and push for the change we need to see. Be that change.

(The more I write, the more I do see that others are of the same mindset. Just came across this blog today ... http://islands.thebahamian.com/grandbahama.html)
